This research examines how German political refugees fleeing the failed revolutions of 1848 transformed South Australia. Using historical records, correspondence and newspapers, it uncovers the contributions of overlooked migrants to education, science, art and culture, revealing how European political upheaval influenced South Australia's intellectual, cultural and colonial development.
